UNESCO World Natural Heritage

A heritage of humanity

The international community wants to preserve natural and cultural creations of outstanding universal value as a heritage of humanity through the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.


The 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage is based on the following considerations:

  • "that parts of the cultural and natural heritage are of outstanding interest and therefore have to be preserved as world heritage of all mankind as a whole;
  • that the cultural and the natural heritage are increasingly threatened with destruction...;
  • that deterioration or disappearance of any item of the cultural or natural heritage constitutes a harmful impoverishment of the heritage of all the nations in the world; ..."
