A natural heritage of international status
The German nature and national parks are our national natural landscapes. Our national natural heritage is preserved in more than 100 natural landscapes. Here is where we can still experience a unique variety of habitats and animal and plant species. The 14 German national parks assume a special responsibility in the
scope of the national natural landscapes. Here nature reigns: natural
processes can run undisturbed, use for foresting purposes is excluded.
Europe is the only place in the world where red beech groves grow, and Hesse is Buchonia, the land of the beeches. The first Hessian national park, the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, therefore protects the largest coherent complex of Luzulo-Fagetum beech grove in Central Europe on a surface of almost 6,000 hectares. Here is where our “wilderness of tomorrow” is evolving.
You will find something unique: A fascinating wilderness in the kingdom of the quaint beeches.
